2013 SCHEDULE AT THE LEARNING FARM!
9:00AM -11:30 AM Preschool:
NEW SESSION BEGINS JANUARY 7TH, 2013
Monday/Wednesday/Friday ages 4-5
(limit of 8 students)
The NEW Learning Farm Preschool is a nature based
preschool where children develop respect for animals,
nature, themselves and each other. Our unique farm
setting offers hands on learning with the daily
opportunity to interact and learn about all the
animals at The Learning Farm. Our thematic
curriculum provides readiness skills that will prepare
your child for Kindergarten, with letter recognition,
number recognition, shapes and colors. We also
work on name, phone number and addresses in
addtion to other Kindergarten curriculum
requirements.
Preschool farm tours still available upon request.

Noon- 2:30 PM HOME SCHOOL CLASSES:
Monday: FUTURE FARMERS 101 (Grades 1-6)
Students will learn about and participate in the
caring of various farm animals. They will learn about
the different breeds of animals and what they are
used for. Animal housing and construction will be
discussed and alternative options to improve
efficiency as well as comfort will be emphasized.
Farming practices such as Extensive Farming,
Factory Farming, Free Range, Organic Farming and
Permaculture will be covered. Historical methods of
farming such as teams of oxen and teams of horses
will be shown and discussed. Get a feel for what it
takes to run a small farm, physically and financially.

Classes held:Jan 14- Jan 28- Feb 4- Feb 11- Feb 2 - March 4
( 6 classes)
Cost: $30 per class for three classes or less- try out
the class without committing to the full session.
Cost: $25 per class for four or more classes.
Tuesday: Hands on Life Science at the Farm
( Grades 1-6)
Farm animal anatomy and physiology will be covered
through hands on handling of our animals. Learn the
gestation and life cycles of our goats, sheep, cows,
horses, pigs, chickens and ducks. Learn to milk a goat
and make cheese. Discuss bacteria and what makes
the milk coagulate to make the cheese. Learn what
distinguishes each species from each other. Learn
about what each animal eats as each student gets to
feed them and get involved in their daily care.
Classes held: Jan 15- Jan 22- Jan 29- Feb 5- Feb 12-
Feb 19- Feb 26- March 5

Wednesday:Hands on Social Studies on the Farm
(Grade 1-6)
Students learn of life in Colonial days through hands on
activities. Topics include historic forms of
transportation. Learn to harness and drive oxen,
harness a horse and learn what it takes to drive a dog
team. Card, dye and spin wool from our very own
sheep. Demonstrations on soap making, candle making
and black smithing. Learn to milk our goats, make
cheese and ice cream. Gather eggs from our chickens
and feed the pigs. Learn how our root cellar works and
why they were so important during Colonial times.
Basic animal care and discussions of a child's life during
Colonial days. ( limit 8 students)
Classes held: Jan 16- Jan 23- Jan 30- Feb 6- Feb 13- Feb 20
Feb 27- March 6 (8 Classes)

class without committing to the full session.

Thursday: Hands on Horsemanship at the Farm
( Grade 1-8)
Learn how to safely halter, bridle, saddle and lead a
horse. Learn to properly brush and clean their feet.
Proper saddle fitting and different bits and bridles
and what makes them work will be topics of
discussion. What are the characteristics of the
different breeds and what they are used for. The
farm will host demonstrations of various types of
riding and horse breeds. What do you look for
when buying a horse? How to choose a breed
that fits you and it's intended use. Proper mounting
and dismounting will be taught along with basic
posture and how to cue the horse. Learn how a horse
communicates. ( limit 8 students)

- Feb 28- March 7 (8 classes)

Friday:AVAILABLE FOR FIELD TRIPS ( ALL AGES) NOON -2:30PM
3:30PM - 6:00 PM AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM (Grade 1-6)
Our after school enrichment program includes
daily horse riding,( weather permitting), evening
feeding and basic animal care and handling. We
do wool projects with wool from our very own
sheep, milk our goats, make cheese, scavenger
hunts, sack races sheep races and lots more
non stop fun! Enjoy our unique rural farm setting
in the middle of Anchorage.
